The Capacity-building Initiative for Transparency - Global Support Programme (CBIT-GSP) is represented at this year's UN COP 29 Climate Conference in Baku, Azerbaijan. The conference is being held from November 11th to November 22nd 2024, and will bring together representatives from around the world including heads of State, government officials, international industry leaders, private sector representatives, academics, experts, and youth representatives.

CBIT-GSP’s Global Project Coordinators Khetsiwe Khumalo and Denis Desgain, are participating in various side events as panelists, where they will be sharing insights and lessons learned from the CBIT-GSP and moderating other events. The CBIT-GSP will be represented at six different events, and will also be supporting the transparency clinic, which will be ongoing throughout the duration of the conference.

On November 15th, CBIT-GSP will be engaged in an interactive panel discussion at the #Together4Transparency space, in the side event 'Showcasing Collaborative Impact for Transparency: CBIT-GSP and Partners in Action'. This side event, which has been organized by the CBIT-GSP, will focus on how CBIT-GSP support has strengthened countries' transparency capacities, highlighting successful partnerships with other major transparency support providers such as UNFCCC, UNDP, FAO IGES, and US-EPA. The objective of this panel discussion is to showcase results, as well as foster dialogue between countries, support providers and global partners. In this event, countries will share their first hand experience in preparing their BTR1!

On November 16th, CBIT-GSP are engaged in a number of side events throughout the duration of the day. Firstly, in the 'National Transparency Systems for Tracking Data-Driven Climate Action' side event organized by the Government of Azerbaijan, countries will participate in peer to peer exchanges through discussion on their experiences in developing MRV systems, and how these systems have facilitated their readiness to the ETF. Overall this session aims to strengthen collaboration among countries, helping them build more robust MRV systems and advance global climate action through transparency.

Later in the day, at the Faith Pavilion, the 'Aligning Transparency: Navigating BTRs and NDCs for Enhanced Climate Action' presentation and panel debate will introduce the work done with developing countries under CBIT-GSP and ICAT. This side event aims to explore the linkages of the BTR and NDC preparation processes and countries will share their experiences on how they have synergized these processes, with the ultimate goal of raising ambition. This session will provide an opportunity for lessons and experiences to be shared between countries.

To close out on activities on the 16th, the CBIT-GSP will take part in the 'Best Practice of BTR Developing in Eurasia, Asia and the Caucasus' side event, located in the Azerbaijan Pavilion. In this interactive sessions key insights will be presented from Azerbaijan's experience of preparing their first BTR. The objective of this event is to explore how lessons from Azerbaijan’s journey can inform other nations in their ETF transition and discuss ways to address common challenges through regional cooperation and technical assistance.

On the 19th, members of the CBIT-GSP team will attend the UNFCCC'S 'Experiences and lessons learned in delivering support to facilitate BTR1 preparation and to enhance capacities to implement the ETF' panel discussion as a member of the panel. By bringing together the UN Climate Change secretariat with international partners, this event aims provide a space for discussion of best practices and lessons learned that they gathered when providing support to developing countries to prepare their first BTRs and to build capacity for future ETF reporting.

A highlight of COP29 operating under #Together4Transparency is UNDP's flagship Transparency Clinic, where countries can book time with experts for one-on-one discussions relating to all things Transparency and Article 13! CBIT-GSP will be supporting and providing expertise to countries in this clinic throughout the duration of COP29. Make sure to book an appointment for this clinic using this link!

Concluding CBIT-GSPs activites at COP29 will be on the 21st November, where the UNFCCC's Technical in-session Dialogue on Gender in Transparency will take place, which seeks to highlight the importance and benefits of including gender considerations within the transparency framework. The CBIT-GSP will be presenting on the progress made in developing the toolkit for integrating gender into climate transparency reporting. Building up to this, the CBIT-GSP will host a Gender Focus Group on the 20th, which aims to consult with Parties on the structure and content of this toolkit!

The CBIT-GSP's participation at COP29 underscores its commitment to enhancing transparency in climate action globally. Through these diverse events, the programme aims to share knowledge, insights, and strengthen international cooperation and partnerships. The CBIT-GSP is committed to empowering developing countries to meet the new transparency requirements under the Paris Agreement.
