Background
Nepal, characterized by its geography and socioeconomic conditions, is a highly vulnerable country to climate change. The nation’s susceptibility to the impacts of extreme weather events and rising temperatures is pronounced. Despite these challenges, Nepal is steadfast in contributing to global initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and foster climate resilience. In recognition of this, Nepal has made significant progress in developing and implementing climate change-related policies and measures in recent years. Nepal’s national climate goals are set out in its 2020 Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) to the Paris Agreement. The NDC includes an activities-based and policy target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from key sectors such as energy (Transport, energy generation, and e-cooking), agriculture, forestry and land use, and waste.
Despite Nepal’s efforts to mitigate climate change, some pressing challenges in reporting remain. Being a developing country, one of the key challenges is the need for more financial resources to invest in sizable mitigation measures and strengthening capacity in its reporting.
Therefore, this event will focus on Nepal’s initiatives for climate change mitigation and the challenges faced in achieving net-zero emission targets, progress towards preparing BUR/BTR and National communication report. The program will begin with a summary statement from the Honorable Minister, Ministry of Forest and Environment, followed by the insights from AEPC, GEF, UNEP that are contributing to accelerating the Nation’s mitigation efforts, including its reporting.
Objectives:
• Report Nepal’s progress in meeting net zero by 2045.
• Conduct a discussion on mitigating the challenges in achieving its climate goals.
