Background

Mongolia joined the UNFCCC and the Paris Agreement in 1992 and 2016 respectively.The UNFCCC secretariat received climate change assessment reports from Mongolia in 2009, 2014, and 2018, and the Initial Biennial Update Report (BUR1) on GHG emissions and Removals was submitted in 2017. This time, Mongolia will submit its second national inventory report in 2023. The second NIR contains updated accounts of net GHG emissions estimate for the period of 1990-2020. The Ministry of Environment and Tourism (MET) and its Climate Change and International Cooperation Department (CCICD) are the national entities with overall responsibility for organizing and coordinating the compilation of National Communications, Biennial updated reports, GHG inventory and submitting them to the UNFCCC Secretariat. CBIT GSP has received a request to conduct a review of the second National Inventory Report prior to its submission to the UNFCCC. 

Objective

By pursuing QA-QC checks, Mongolia strive to improve the overall quality of their GHG inventories, enhance transparency and credibility, meet international reporting obligations, and support effective climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts. This process serves to bolster confidence in the accuracy and credibility of the reported data, while also facilitating the country's participation in international climate change negotiations and collaborations.
