Empowering Philippines: Training Workshop on IPCC 2006 Guidelines for preparation of national GHG inventory under BTR
Jaypalsinh Chauhan

Amidst the global challenges posed by climate change, it is crucial for countries to comprehend and precisely quantify their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The 2006 Guidelines established by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) offer a comprehensive framework for the estimation of GHG emissions in significant sectors, including energy, industry, and waste. The Philippines recently requested CBIT GSP to organized a training workshop to address the current challenges. The training workshop specifically targeted entities that are actively involved in handling such data within the country.

The primary objectives of this training session are to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the 2006 IPCC Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventory (GHGI) in the Energy, IPPU and Waste Sectors. Participants will explore the fundamental principles, methodologies, and reporting requirements outlined in these guidelines, with a specific focus on their practical application within the unique contexts of energy and waste management.

Enhancing Capacity: The workshop provided an opportunity for participants to thoroughly explore the complexities of the IPCC 2006 Guidelines, enabling them to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills for precise estimation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The ability to build capacity is of utmost importance in order to ensure that countries possess the necessary expertise to meet their reporting responsibilities and make well-informed policy choices pertaining to climate action.

Promoting Collaboration: Through the convergence of professionals, policymakers, and practitioners from diverse agencies, the workshop facilitated the establishment of a collaborative atmosphere conducive to the exchange of ideas and optimal methodologies. The cultivation of a collaborative mindset is crucial in addressing climate change at both regional and global levels, as it is evident that no singular body can effectively tackle this intricate matter in isolation.

Empowering Countries: The Philippines' initiative sends a powerful message to other Asian countries – that support and expertise are available to assist in navigating the challenges of GHG emissions estimation. Through collaboration and knowledge-sharing, nations can strengthen their climate resilience and contribute meaningfully to global efforts to mitigate climate change.

Call to Action for Asian Countries: We urge all Asian countries to take note of this proactive approach and consider organizing similar workshops or engaging in collaborative efforts to enhance their capabilities in GHG emissions estimation.
