Objective

The main objective of the inception workshop is to introduce the Capacity-Building Initiative for Transparency – Global Support Programme (CBIT-GSP) to the members of the regional network of the Caribbean and kick-off the project work plan with proposed activities for 2023. It is expected that the participants will discuss the key findings of the capacity needs assessment of the transparency network, which has been conducted by the CBIT-GSP team and jointly agree on proposed project activities for 2023 to support them building technical and individual capacities on climate transparency and reporting in the region.

Background

The UNEP Copenhagen Climate Center (UNEP-CCC) is implementing the Capacity Building Initiative for Transparency Global support programme (CBIT-GSP) funded by the Global environment Facility. The he CBIT-GSP project aims to provide streamlined support and capacity-building at the national, regional, and global levels to assist developing countries in responding to the reporting provisions under the UNFCCC and the Paris Agreement’s Enhanced Transparency Framework, and ultimately increase ambition for climate action. The core of the CBIT-GSP project is its ten Regional Transparency Networks around the globe to provide adequate support to countries, foster south-south learning and facilitate exchange of lessons learned and good practice among countries. This event serves as the launch of the Regional Transparency Network for Anglophone Caribbean under the CBIT-GSP and initiate the annual work plan of the network. A capacity needs assessment of transparency was conducted in January 2023, to identify gaps and needs, and to prioritize next steps, which - implemented both at the national and regional level- will help strengthen the reporting capacities of the members of the network of the Caribbean on GHG inventory, adaptation and loss and damage, NDC tracking and support needed and received in the frameworks of their NCs, BURs and BTRs.

The Inception Workshop will gather Coordinators of National Communications and Biennial Update Reports, senior experts from the national agencies dealing with climate policy who oversee the establishment of MRV and the national Enhanced Transparency Frameworks and experts dealing with data collection and greenhouse gas inventory, adaptation and impacts, NDC tracking and support needed and received.
