Objective:

The main objective of the inception workshop is to introduce the Capacity-Building Initiative for Transparency – Global Support Programme (CBIT-GSP) to the members of the Regional Transparency Network for Anglophone Africa and kick-off the project work plan with proposed activities for 2023. It is expected that the participants will discuss the key findings of the capacity needs assessment of transparency, recently conducted by the CBIT-GSP team and jointly agree on proposed project activities for 2023 to support them in building technical and individual capacities on climate transparency and reporting in the region.

Background:

The UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre (UNEP-CCC) is implementing the Capacity-Building Initiative for Transparency – Global Support Programme (CBIT-GSP), a global transparency support programme , funded by the Global Environment Facility. The CBIT-GSP project aims to provide streamlined support and capacity-building at the national, regional, and global levels to assist developing countries in responding to the reporting provisions under the UNFCCC and the Paris Agreement’s Enhanced Transparency Framework, and ultimately increase ambition for climate action. The core of the CBIT-GSP project is its ten Regional Transparency Networks around the globe to provide adequate support to countries, foster south-south learning and facilitate exchange of lessons learned and good practice among countries. This event serves as the launch of the Regional Transparency Network for Anglophone Africa under the CBIT-GSP and initiate the annual work plan of the network. A capacity needs assessment of transparency has been conducted by the CBIT-GSP team in November-December 2022, to identify gaps and needs, and to prioritize the next steps, which - implemented both at the national and regional level- will help strengthen the reporting capacities of the members of the Regional Transparency Network for Anglophone Africa on GHG inventory, NDC tracking, adaptation and loss damage, as well as support needed and received in the context of their NCs, BURs and the forthcoming BTRs.

Target Audience and Language:

The Inception Workshop will gather Coordinators of National Communications and Biennial Update Reports, senior experts from the national agencies dealing with climate policy who oversee the establishment of MRV and the National Enhanced Transparency Frameworks and experts dealing with data collection and greenhouse gas inventory, adaptation and impacts, climate finance and NDC tracking. On the other hand, the meeting also awaits representatives from international agencies who are dealing with climate change and transparency in the region, including UNFCCC, FAO, PATPA, World Bank, IPCC-TFI and IGES. The meeting will be held in English.
